A showoff has three signs: he is very active when people are present, very lazy when he is alone and he loves to be praised in all matters.

‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab radhi allaahu anhu said,

Verily, the followers of opinion are the enemies of the Sunan (the teachings of Allah’s Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam as passed down in hadeeth): they were unable to preserve them and their meanings escaped them, and when asked [questions] they were too embarrassed to say ‘We don’t know,’ so they opposed the Sunan with their opinions.

Narrated Anas Bin Malik: I heard Allah’s Apostle (Sallallahu ‘Aaihi Wa Sallam) saying,

“Allah said, ‘If I deprive my slave of his two beloved things (i.e. his eyes) and he remains patient, I will let him enter Paradise in compensation for them.”

“The pious offspring who casts a single look of affection at his parents receives a reward from God equal to the reward of an accepted Hajj.”

"Al-Hasan Al-Basrî – Allah have mercy on him – said:

When a man sought knowledge, it would not be long before it could be seen in his humbleness, his sight, upon his tongue and his hands, in his prayer, in his speech and in his disinterest (zuhd) in worldly allurements. And a man would acquire a portion of knowledge and put it into practice, and it would be better for him than the world and all it contains – if he owned it he would give it in exchange for the hereafter.
